The Games |
Welcome to the Games section! Here will be some short descriptions and discussion on the important games that Malon, Marin, Ilia and Midna
have been in. Topics will include their roles and character interactions with Link. The games will be listed the order they
were released. Some spoilers are here to read carefully!
Part of Ilia's description is credit to Calm and Hope.
Link's Awakening - Marin
"Please don't ever forget this song...or me..."
Marin, as well as Tarin, are the very first characters Link meets when awakening on Koholint Island. Throughout Link's adventures
he gathers numerous items such as instruments that are key in helping a being called the Wind Fish. He also learns a number of
songs to play on his ocarina, but the most well known out of all of them is Marin's song, the Ballad of the Windfish. She teaches
this to Link while they are both in Mabe Village and says it's her favorite to sing. She also hopes Link never forgets that song
or her, as well.
During the course of the story there are a few things that happen to Marin that Link becomes involved in. Marin aids him in assisting
a walrus, who is blocking a path that Link must follow. There is also a very touching scene by the beach where Link, after
having found Marin's favorite spot to watch the sea, learns that Marin believes there is something beyond her island home and
that she wonders if the Wind Fish would grant her a wish to somehow see the world. Later in the game Marin ends up being captured and left in the Tal Tal
Heights mountain range where she admits being afraid of heights and so Link must rescue her. It's in this part of the game that
Marin appears to come close to admitting her feelings for Link after she is saved, but Tarin interrupts them and leaves with him
leaving Link to wonder(?) what exactly Marin wished to say.
Some fans believe that this is as close to a canon pairing so far in the series with Link.
Fun fact: There is also a Marin Trophy availble to collect in Super Smash Bros. Melee!
Ocarina of Time - Malon
"Oh, Epona! She's grown fond of you, fairy boy."
Malon is the daughter of Talon, owner of Lon Lon Ranch in Hyrule. She's a cheerful and bright girl who teaches Link Epona's Song
which she reveals her mother had composed in the past. This song has the ability to summon Epona almost anywhere in the game when
Link is an adult.
The first instance Link finds Malon is in Hyrule Castle Town in the Market. She greets Link and makes amusing comments about
his clothing and that he must be a fairy boy from the forest. She also says she's waiting for her father Talon who is busily
delivering milk to the castle. The next time they meet it is at night near the castle gates; Malon is standing by some growing
vines, singing, and still waiting for her father! It is here that Malon, who assumes that her lazy father must have fallen
asleep during the delivery, gives Link a Cucco's Egg she was busy keeping incubated. Her plan is to let Link use the egg and the
cucco that will soon hatch from it as a type of alarm to awaken her father. Link keeps the egg and finds Talon, asleep like his
daughter predicted, and awakens him with the newly hatched cucco. Talon rises to his feet and comically runs off saying Malon
would really let him have it since he left her all alone!
At this point Malon is not involved in the main story's progression until she's an adult. However the ranch is open at any
time during the day while Link adventures around Hyrule before going into the Temple of Time and time moves forward seven years into the future. When this
does occur Link is able to go back to Lon Lon only to find it in the hands of Ingo who's using the ranch to gain favor with
the Evil King, Ganondorf. Link meets Malon again and finds her depressed about the state of the ranch and the loss of her father
who was kicked out and forced to live in Kakariko while she has to stay at Lon Lon and obey Ingo or else he would treat the
horses badly. Link confronts Ingo and they have a race with Link coming out the victor. In anger Ingo locks Link into the
corral and taunts him, daring him to see if he can escape. Link mounts Epona and leaps over one of the ranch's far walls which
causes Ingo to cower at the hero's skills and wish for no hard feelings. Malon thanks Link for all he's done for the ranch and
for her family, saying that she knew he was familiar by how Epona recognized him. Out of all the normal citizens of Hyrule it
is Malon who remembers him the best.
Some fun facts about Malon include that she's the record setter for the race track around the corral at Lon Lon. A Gossip Stone
right outside the Temple of Time also reveals that she awaits a knight in shining armor to sweep her off her feet! Another fun
fact is that it's also possible to collect a Lon Lon Milk Bottle Trophy in the game Super Smash Bros. Melee!
Twilight Princess
"Just come back safely." - Ilia
Ilia, Link's childhood friend and companion, is a very caring and kind girl. While quite spirited and perhaps a little impulsive
as well she loves Link's horse Epona and cherishes Link.
Ilia is placed into the plot of the story quite early on in fact when Ilia and the children are taken from Ordon by a small
ban of bulblins, leading Link to give chase, setting the events of the game in motion. By following his friends into the
twilight he is able to encounter Midna and soon after that, Princess Zelda. I'm going to point out that even though Ilia is
captured she never has to actually be rescued by Link, but is instead able to escape her captors with the help of Impaz and
seek refuge with her in the Hidden Village, where she helped take care of the elderly woman. Later, while suffering from
memory loss, Ilia rescued the unconscious young zora prince, Ralis, and carried him with her to Castle Town hoping to save his
life. She never once leaves his side and cares for him until he is well and returns to his home. Eventually Ilia's memory is
restored and she gives Link all her blessings to succeed in his quest to help Hyrule. She also gives him a special charm which
can be used to summon Epona almost anywhere.
At the end of the game Link helps escort the children and Ilia from Kakariko back to Ordon Village; however Link does not remain
there for very long and the last we see of Ilia is her standing along the path watching him ride away, waiting faithfully
until he returns home.

"Eee hee! Are you sure you want to be doing that? Snarling and glaring at me?" - Midna
Indomitable and bossy, Midna is quite the character! As a Twili and opponent against Zant she has her own agenda and her own goals to accomplish and isn't
above using Link, and whatever/whoever else, to get it. At first her attitude is quite abrasive; Link becomes her stepping
stone on numerous ocassions to get what she wants all the while claiming she was helping him too. And while a part of that is
true Midna made sure to take an opportunity when it presented itself, even if Link protested or wasn't sure what exactly she
was doing.
Throughout the course of the game however Midna's personality shifts from that of a pushy, impish creature to that more closely
resembling a friend. Midna begins to care for Link as a companion as well and instead of using her typical forceful nature she
learns to speak to Link in more friendly and convincing ways of speech. This is a sign that she has begun to truly respect him
and consider him more than merely a servant to help her in her objectives.
By the end of the game Link and Midna have become a fighting force to be reckoned with against Zant. Ganondorf proves to be too
much for Midna to handle however and the King of Evil is left to the hands of Zelda and Link, both believing she had perished
when Ganondorf destroyed Hyrule Castle. After the defeat of Ganondorf by Link's hands he realizes that Midna did not die after
all; he rushes to her when he sees a figure in the distance and stops short, speechless as he sees Midna in her true form for
the first time.
What? Say something! Am I so beautiful that you have no words left?
Link, Zelda and Midna return to the Mirror of Twilight at the Arbiter's Grounds where, as she is leaving, Midna shatters the
Mirror, preventing any further contact between the worlds of Light and Twilight.
