Diamond in the Rough - Welcome!
Please enjoy viewing Diamond in the Rough, the largest and long-standing website and forum supporting the Malink fandom on the internet!

The Characters
So who are the characters involved in the great video game series, The Legend of Zelda? There's quite a number of them, but for simplicity's sake we are going to focus on those based in the pairings of this website. These are not completely flesh out character descriptions either; to better understand them it's always best to play the games they're in!

Some spoilers may be here, however! So read carefully!

Link - The hero! The player plays as Link in every game and saves Hyrule from the King of Evil, Ganon. For the most part Link is a bit emotionless and lacks any sort of narrative in the games. However in more recent games such as Windwaker and Twilight Princess a personality for the Hylian hero has come to light. There's nothing incredibly quirky about him, but he's a strong fighter, selfless in that he fights for his friends and Hyrule, and can also be a bit clueless too!

Traditional 'Malink' Characters
Malon - The singing ranch girl who bestows upon Link the endearing nick name "Fairy Boy" as well as "Epona's Song," a melody that can summon Epona from almost anywhere in Hyrule. Malon loves animals like horses, cows and cuccos as well as singing to pass the time. Her beauty is renown in Hyrule Castletown due to her flame red hair and bright blue eyes. She's an accomplished horseback rider as well. In Ocarina of Time, Malon's debute game, a Gossip Stone right outside the Temple of Time reveals that Malon awaits a knight in shining armor to sweep her off her feet.

Malon has been described as a very cheerful sort of girl that loves to laugh and is friendly to others. It's also implied by Talon, her father, that she has quite the temper as well! With her father and Ingo, a fellow ranch-hand, she lives at Lon Lon Ranch where the best milk in Hyrule is produced.

In the game Majora's Mask Malon's character design makes a return but in the forms of sisters Romani and Cremia. Both of them live on Romani Ranch in the land of Termina.

Malon also appears in other games such as The Minish Cap, Oracle of Seasons and Four Swords as brief cameos.

Malon's appearance bears great resemblence to Marin from Link's Awakening, having the same bright red hair, as well as certain character traits such as loving animals and a great talent for singing. Technically, since Marin and Malon are so similar and that Marin was influenced by Zelda's design it can also be said that Malon was partially influenced by Zelda's design as well.

Marin - The island girl of Koholint Island. She's the daughter of Tarin and is the one who saved Link when she found him unconscious on the beach. Marin dreams of seeing the world beyond her small island home. She also teaches Link the song that will awaken the Wind Fish. It is also said that she greatly resembles Princess Zelda.

One of the most memorable quotes of Marin in Link's Awakening is when Marin, after being saved by Link when she was captured in the Tal Tal Heights, is hinted that she tried to confess her feelings for him but is interrupted with the arrival of Tarin.

Newer Characters to the Pairing Fandom
Ilia - Link's childhood friend in the game Twilight Princess. She loves Epona and is the type of girl who isn't afraid to speak her mind or scold those who cross her. She's a good spirited girl however and cherishes Link greatly.

Ilia often serves as a type of connection Link has to his home in Ordon Village, resembling childhood memories, his old life and the peace of homely stability.

Midna - An impish creature that aids Link in his quest in the game Twilight Princess. She's terribly bossy, pushy and appears self-centered. It took some time for Link to warm up to Midna completely during their quest to save Hyrule but over the course of the game Midna and Link develop a bond of camraderie and friendship (and perhaps more!).

The first impressions of Midna aren't the greatest: in fact she's much like her appearance as an imp! She teases, goads and taunts Link during the game in order to get her way most of the time. Midna's feelings change over time however and instead of treating Link like some sort of servant she begins to see him as the hero he is...and grows to care for him.
